Inspiration through education
"We partner with Nepali schools in the Himalayas to connect them with fluent English teachers, infrastructure projects, and teaching materials. We collaborate to identify key projects and get schools the physical tools they need to transform students’ lives."
Brad's Vision
Brad Hurvitz realized the opportunity for a teaching organization in Nepal in 2009. At that time, he was teaching at a school in Rajasthan, India and took a trip to Nepal to go trekking during a two week school holiday. While on this trip, he saw the Nepali students trekking their way to school and home again every day and learned more about the rural schools from his guide, Madan. The two approached the headmaster of the school in Ghandruk to explore the prospect of bringing fluent English teachers to come to the community to teach English in their school. They enjoyed a very encouraging reception. At that time, it looked like no English-speaking teachers were offering English language instruction in western Nepal. It didn’t take long for Brad and Madan to agree to partner to found the organization that soon became Trek To Teach. Brad registered the domain name at the first opportunity.
When Brad returned to University in Oregon, he registered the 501 ( c ) ( 3 ) in February 2011. He and Madan registered Trek to Teach Nepal as an NGO in Nepal in the spring of 2011. At about the same time, he developed the organization’s website. Trek To Teach made arrangements to provide a teacher with a school in Ghandruk in 2011. TTT started work with its second school in Chommrong in in the summer of 2012. It provided a teacher who taught courses to students in grades 4 to 7. Each class had 6 to 12 students. The teacher stayed 12 weeks - the standard TTT term.

TTT Milestones - Illustrated
Organizational growth
In 2013, TTT placed teachers in two communities: Ghandruk and a new partnered school in Tolka. That number grew to four teachers in 2014. In 2015, Nepal was rocked with a 7.8 magnitude earthquake. This was a transformational year for TTT to expand its mission in order to include safety alongside education. Our three teachers in 2015 decided to stay at their placements and went even further to assist the country with relief work. From 2015 to 2020, our teachers have raised money to fund projects in each of our communities. We've installed water fountains, built a library, installed a school fence and recently completed a school building with the help of MyTefl.
To date, TTT has placed 46 teachers in five communities. Our organization is alive because of our fearless Nepali team on the ground and our alumni who are from more than five countries. We continue to challenge ourselves to think critically about our impact, bringing only the most thoughtful, respectful and passionate teachers we can find.
